Spring & Summer Weed Pulls &

I think we can all agree that summer is officially here, even if we haven’t reached the solstice (June 20) yet. It’s hot and the plants are growing… like, weeds!
Thanks to assistance from Pentair Valves & Controls, Urban Outfitters, Lahontan Audubon volunteers, and the community at large, we’ve had great help digging thistle at Silver Lake May 11th and collecting trash at Swan Lake June 1st.
Last Saturday (June 1st) volunteers focused their efforts on cleaning the creek that supplies Swan Lake with water most of the year. Because this is nesting season, we were given lots of notice from angry Killdeer parents when our work took us too close to their nests. Last year we found a nest of eggs, and this year we saw chicks. Oh, there’s nothing cuter than a baby Killdeer!
As a veteran of many clean-ups I do my best to keep track of the trash of choice. This year it was plastic bags! I know the wind captures stray trash and makes clean-ups a never ending requirement, but for anyone who spends time picking up these bags it’s not hard to understand why communities consider banning plastic bags.
On behalf of all the plants and animals that depend on Silver and Swan Lake – thank you for your help!
